Alquézar is an ancient Arabic fortress, located in the province of Huesca in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The village lies within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Reserve and you’ll need to follow a winding road through an area of scenic beauty to reach it (about 45-minute drive from Huesca). This climbing area has a rich cultural heritage on a stunning natural background. The village is a beloved touristy destination throughout the year for people who love nature, peaceful places, history, good food, good wine, and beautiful views. It offers a good number of restaurants and bars where you can taste local specialities and several agencies that organize guided tours and outdoor activities. There is also a very good choice when it comes to deciding where to stay – campsite, climbers refugio, hostel, private apartments or luxury hotels – everyone will find their perfect accommodation.
But Alquézar is also very well known among the Spanish and international climbers community. Its perfect limestone and its quiet surroundings make it unique. Several crags and many sectors with very different styles of climbing: from vertical walls to huge overhanging roofs, here you can explore both vertical and horizontal dimensions.

Due to local climate and south-facing orientation of most of the sectors, this area is highly recommendable for the winter season: you’ll often wake up down in the valley surrounded by fog at zero degrees of temperature and think that you better stay in, but you’ll be surprised and enjoy a warm day climbing with no t-shirt.
The local climbing guidebook “Alquezar Guía de escalada deportiva” by Javier Rodríguez is a good information source but not quite up-to-date, as it was released in 2014 and fails to review the newest sectors and bolted routes.
